Indiana Tech to build new facility in Huntington
Indiana Institute of Technology will build a new facility in Huntington for its College of Professional Studies. Occupancy is expected in July 2007.
The university has operated a satellite location at 960 E. State St., in the former MagneTek Sanderson Center, since 2001.In a news release, a university spokesman said the decision to build on Commercial Road in Northpoint Business Park was made because enrollment growth and expanded class offerings in Huntington “have created the need for additional space designed to meet the needs of nontraditional students.”
The new 4,330-square-foot facility on Commercial Road, will have space for four classrooms, including a computer lab, as well as university staff offices.
Indiana Tech's College of Professional Studies offers undergraduate degrees in accounting, business administration, criminal justice, general studies, information systems, industrial and manufacturing engineering, and organizational leadership. Graduate programs include an MBA with four areas of concentration.
Pam Fech, enrollment manager at Indiana Tech's Huntington facility, said 125 students are currently enrolled here, reflecting steady growth from the 35 students who signed up when classes were first offered in 2001.“The nontraditional, over-23 student is our general audience,” she said, adding that more courses will be offered at the new location.
“We now offer both morning and evening classes,” she said of the effort to provide study opportunities for people working different shifts. “That will continue, and I expect we'll see more evening classes as we grow.”
Fech said Indiana Tech has already graduated students who have taken all their classes at Huntington. Associate's, bachelor's and master's degree programs in business administration can be completed here, as can degrees in industrial manufacturing engineering and general studies. A degree program in criminal justice will be offered starting in February, and students at Huntington are taking preparatory classes in majors like accounting and nursing that can be completed at Indiana Tech's main campus in Fort Wayne.
The school's College of Professional Studies classes use an accelerated format designed to accommodate nontraditional students. Each course meets once a week for five-week or six-week sessions, allowing students to attend full-time without sacrificing other commitments. Students can register online or by phone, fax, or mail, and textbooks will be shipped to them.
The College of Professional Studies also has campuses in Indianapolis and Elkhart, offices in Greenwood, Plainfield, South Bend, and Warsaw, and classes in more than 25 other locations. Indiana Tech has approximately 3,000 students enrolled throughout its system.
DP Ventures LLC is an investor with Indiana Tech on the Huntington project.

Wal-Mart upgrade may spur more Northpoint growth
The developer of Northpoint Business Park says the arrival of the super Wal-Mart should attract more businesses to the park and surrounding area.
Wayne Grigsby, president of Northpoint Group, Inc., said the announcement last year that the local Wal-Mart would be upgraded “coincided with Indiana Tech looking” at a site elsewhere in the park, and was a factor in the university's decision to build.“In any retail area, when you have a Wal-Mart it brings a certain amount of business along with it,” Grigsby said. “With a super Wal-Mart, this brings that to another level. There are more businesses that will follow this kind of transformation.”
The Indiana Tech building will be the first one located along Commercial Road north of Hauenstein Road. Grigsby said there are still 50 acres to be developed throughout the 87-acre park. He said there “will be more announcements forthcoming about businesses in the park and that general area.”
Grigsby's company bought the acreage in 1994 and infrastructure was completed two years later. Twenty commercial and professional businesses operate there now, including new ownership for The Coach and Horses pub in the former Canal Cafe building.
“We're very excited and happy to have a new owner for that business,” he said.
